We are NYAN (Not Your Average Nerds) Robotics, 10091, a third-year FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC) team that competes with over 5000 teams worldwide. We are sponsored by Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein Illinois, as well as several local businesses. Carmel Catholic has NYAN as their Varsity team but also has a Junior Varsity FTC team named “Not Not Nerds” (N Cubed) who we help out and mentor. We have 11 members who you can learn more about on the “Meet the Nerds” page.
During the building process of our robot, we learn important skills based in STEM. This year’s FTC challenge is called Relic Recovery, a unique competition from previous years. We and our competitors must build a robot that can carry blocks (called “glyphs”) into a series of columns as well as move a figurine (called a relic) to a point outside the field of play. For a more in-depth explanation, please view the video below.
Our mission is to not only enhance our own STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills, however, but also to foster an interest in robotics within the community and at our school. This season, we hosted or participated in many community-based outreach programs and workshops, inspiring youth with our BB-8, our Thor Hammer, and our robot. We also promote ourselves, Carmel Catholic, and its activities, STEM, robotics, and FIRST® on our website. For a comprehensive list of our Outreach Events, visit the Outreach tab.
